Artifacts: EDCI 52800: Bay Area Regional Science Olympiad Performance Analysis and Bay Area Regional Science Olympiad Performance Improvement Recommendations
Identifies and analyzes learning and performance problems
These two artifacts analyze and suggest solutions to problems encountered with the Bay Area Regional Science Olympiad tournament. This is an organization I have volunteered with for a number of years as an event judge and event supervisor. I choose this event for both of these projects due to myself and other volunteers having a bad experience at the 2014 tournament.
It was interesting to use the skills I was learning in performance support to analyze something I was involved in. Though it was difficult at times to set my opinion aside when trying to determine the exact problems, by doing that I saw the problems that occurred more clearly and was even able to see where I could improve. Overall I believe I was able to use the skills I had gained to correctly analyze the performance problems.
Design, plans, and develops instructional interventions using appropriate strategies and techniques
Additionally, this project also shows my ability to plan, develop, and evaluate a plan to improve performance. Though this project did not lead to the development of a traditional course, it did include the development of job aids, self-study materials, and process improvements. Through this project I was able to develop instructional materials outside of the traditional course, something I had wanted to add to my instructional design tool belt.
Develops an evaluation plan for a project based on stated goals and recognized standards
The project plan included a volunteer survey as a way to evaluate the recommended improvements and the tournament in general. One of the things I learned through this program was the importance of not skipping the evaluation step.
Because of this experience and the other things I learned about performance support I am now able to better evaluate a problem and find the best and most efficient way to solve it with or without using training.
I should add that due to a change in the regional tournament, I was not able to implement these changes in this years tournament, but am hoping to implement some of them at a different tournament next year.
